Our new drop forging hammer

The project

Taking into account the demand for larger drop forged parts, we have been discussing a drop forge hammer in the size of 100 to 125 kJ for quite some time.

The delivery time situation in the past years and the possibility of a longer breakdown of our 10 years old drop forge hammer caused us now to acquire a 125-kJ drop forge hammer.

This project of the century is introduced on this page and the progress of this growth is documented and actualized with pictures and text.

The administrative board decided in spring 2000 allowing the investment of 3.5 Million CHF for the project of an additional forge hammer in the size of 125 kJ. This forge hammer has been put into operation in June 2003.

As a preparation measure, the old material storage yard has been moved and at the same time enlarged. A new crane system was necessary and a street was built to access the territory to the company’s new area. This work was completed in the middle of 2001.

Afterwards, the extension of the smithery was started. The building work started on October 1, 2001 and was completed in spring 2002. In the meantime, we were able to buy a 400 ton press on the second-hand market to be used for trimming, punching and forming by upsetting.

After a careful evaluation, the order for a hydraulic LASCO Double-Acting Hammer, type HO-U 1250 has been placed on April 19, 2002. With this, the point of no return has been reached for the project “Group 7”.

Production process

September 2002:
Casting of anvil bed with a weight of materials (including manufacturing losses) of 240 tons at SKODA in Pilsen (Czechia).

October 2002:
Heat-treatment of the anvil bed at SKODA.

November 2002:
Start of machining process at SKODA with personnel from Lasco.

Ram Hammer

The ram hammer, the hitting part of our new hammer, was mechanically processed at Lasco in Coburg.

Steering Block

This control block is responsible for the precise performance of the hit.

Various Parts

See from left to right:

-Eight tension bolts fixing the driving head of the 150 tons heavy anvil bed (frame) of the hammer.
-Six pressure accumulators, which by means of the hydraulic pump bring the oil pressure up to the necessary 200 bar.
-Two electric motors, which have together 220 kW power.


February 2003

A permanent reliability of operation of the drop forge hammer depends on a perfect and solid foundation. The excavated earth for this leads to a ditch of 6 x 7 m with a depth of 4 m.

Arrival at our plant

On 7th May 2003 the new hammer finally arrived at our plant. Spectators, police men and cardrivers had to be patient as It took a few hours until the truck stood at the backside of the smithery and the downloading could start.


Unloading/ bringing-in

The next and very spectacular step was the unloading and bringin-in of the hammer: a difficult and dangerous task.

First, a ground plate made of iron, weighing 12 tons, had to be placed on the founding:

The assembly of the hammer took about three weeks.

Apart from all the mechanical work, we had to lay electric mains and hydraulic pipes and adjust the various control elements.



On 25th June 2003 at 5.15 p.m., the official inauguration party took place and on the next morning, we started to produce flanges with a diameter of 500 mms and weighing 55 kgs each.
